Do Now: 10/19

We have been reading Gary Soto's plays, poems, and short stories. We have noticed that Gary Soto likes to write about 5 themes. Also that he has repeated elements throughout his writing. These two qualities create a thread that runs throughout Gary Soto's body of work, connecting each piece together. Now that you have read "Ode To Pablo's Tennis Shoes" write in one of your Philosopher's Questions from your homework. Then respond to at least one other person's philosopher's question.

Why was he talking about tennis shoes in his poem?

One of my philosopher question's is why do you think he would get up over and over if he is so hurt?

Why did Gary Soto wrote about sport like playing football because he have never talk about that?

Melissa, an Ode is a poem that is dedicated to something. I think he named it Ode to Pablo's Tennis Shoes because he was dedicating the poem to the shoes that have worked so hard for him.

"He Should have bathed
But he didn't"

Why didn't he bat?

One of my philosophers from Ode to Pablo's Tennis Shoes was from the Mexican Novelas on TV" and i asked why do you think Pablo's mother was laughing at the Mexican Novelas or what do you think was so funny?

One of my philosopher's question is why did he wrote this poem?

Anonymous said...

why does it talk about football then, shoes?

Anonymous said...

Why does he use quotes that really don't have answers??

Anonymous said...

"Why does he need eight hours of sleep to cool his shoes"?

why is there two scenes in this story that happen when pablo's in school and one when he is in his bedroom? basicly what i mean is why does the scene changes every paragraph?

Gegeul, That is a great observation. You are right. Usually Gary Soto uses the element of baseball in his work, not football. Perhaps he became interested in football while he was writing this poem. What do you think?

Why is he so dirty?

Why did Pablo come from playing football and did not bathe?

Anonymous said...

To Tania maybe he didn't take a bath because he was to tierd.

LIKE MARSHA SAID THAT WHY IS HE TALKING ABOUT TENNIS SHOES DOES HE WANT TO PLAY TENNIS AND DOES HE NEED TENNIS SHOES

Anonymous said...

why were the shoes sun-beaten and rain-beaten

Anonymous said...

Now i get it. But why would he want to write a poem that is dedicated to his shoes? Even though he wore it and it kept him from being barefoot, why would he want to do that?

Marsha I think never stop because he want to show his team mate that he was strong.

Who Made Gary Soto Want To Write Poems?

Anonymous said...

Why do you guys think that Pablo
(in the poem) drank so much water if known that it would make him go to the bathroom?

Anonymous said...

"Why does the boy race to the fountain"?

Anonymous said...

" And his shoes to get him there. He loves his shoes"

Why do you think he'd love a pair of broken down shoes so much?

Anonymous said...

One of my philosopher's question is Why did he write this poem and did it for little kids, teenagers or did he write it for parents?

Anonymous said...

Marsha, I think that he would get up over and over again because he want's to keep going. He wasn't going to let the pain keep him from doing what he wanted. He wanted to show that he was strong and nothing can stop him.

Why does he name the story ODE to Pablo's Tennis shoes when he talks about them playing football ?

Geguel,
But then it talks about his shoes i still don't quite get it!

Anonymous said...

why is the poem called "Ode to Pablo's Tennis Shoes"?

Anonymous said...

melissa i think i can answer your question because in the poem says he wanted to be like his shoes

Anonymous said...

To Melissa maybe he was talking about the tennis shouse because it was based on his life or he probaley had a pair.

Anonymous said...

Shaylea Why do you think that Pablo drank so much water

Anonymous said...

Unita I guess Gary Soto loved his shoes when he was a kid he wanted to write a poem about it.

Anonymous said...

why did Gary Soto decided to change his story topic and write about shes because I've notice that in his writing he mostly talked about relationships, school, family and friends not about his shoes, maybe he has a relationship with his shoes

Anonymous said...

Why did he change his themes? Because his themes are friends, relationships, schools., and work not sports.

Anonymous said...

The reason why I think that he made a poem about Tennis Shoes is because he probably used to play Tennis as a little boy.

Anonymous said...

I think that you are write Mrs.graham he really never talk about sport in his poem if you see he most talk about love and relationship.

Anonymous said...

Why did he talk about football

Anonymous said...

But Melissa,
then it talks about shoes right after (i think)it's just weird.

Anonymous said...

Unita, I think he loved his shoes so much because they was nice. and i guess everytime he would play they was the shoes that he wore the most.

Anonymous said...

Marsha, he talks about him playing football then his shoes because after playing football he knows about what his shoes do for him

Anonymous said...

Marsha- I dont think he was hurt he was just tired from being outside.

Anonymous said...

Joyanne maybe because it was his favorite shoes to play tennis in.

Anonymous said...

Melissa- I think the poem was named "Ode To Pablo's Tennis Shoes " because Pablo is a name and he was talking about his shoes

Anonymous said...

Gerelda, maybe he was having flash backs.

Anonymous said...
